Donna Vekic is certainly having a golden moment. First at Wimbledon making it to the semi-finals, and an extraordinary ascent it was throughout the competition, and now at the Olympics in Paris reaching the final. Suffice to say we at Uomo Sport & Donna Sport are very proud and excited for our brand ambassador, whom we have always believed in. And for Donna Vekic herself, it can be said that these last months have been nothing short of a Cinderella story.
On the night before Vekic is set to play in the women's singles tennis final at the 2024 Olympics, going for gold (a silver for Croatia is already guaranteed), it is hard to imagine she almost said goodbye to tennis at Roland Garros just months ago. The story from the clay courts has certainly taken a dramatic change of direction for Vekic - a phoenix has risen. She has smashed all her matches in Paris so far and most notably, knocking off the no. 2 seed and team US flagbearer Coco Gauff in the round of 16, winning in straight sets. And then another epic 2 set win in her semi-final against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (6-4 6-0).
Not only is this a personal best for Donna, but for her country as well. This is the first time in history that a Croatian has reached the final of the singles tennis competition at the Olympics. "I have no words. I can't believe it, I'm so happy. This was one of my main goals, perhaps the biggest I had since I started my career". Donna continues to say, "My goal is to win gold but regardless I will enjoy the final on Saturday". We are certainly behind you Donna, and can't wait to watch you play China's Zheng Qinwen tomorrow.
